The Department of Plastic Surgery was established on the Republic day in 1964 at Topiwala National Medical College and B. Y. L. Nair Hospital. In 1972 it became a full-fledged department with 16 beds with Dr. S. M. Mahaluxmivala as a Professor and Head of the Department. Dr. Narendra Pandya, after receiving his broad based training in plastic surgery in the UK and USA became the next Head and retired in 1990. He was followed by Dr. (Miss) N. R. Lalwani.
Dr. Amresh Baliarsing took over the reins as the head in 2007. Under his leadership, the department saw the establishment of the Clinical Skills Laboratory in 2012 as a cadaveric dissection laboratory and Nair Multispeciality Library and resource center in 2018.
Dr. Uday Bhat is the current head of the department from November 2018. Under him, the department provided a yeoman service during the Covid19 pandemic, and saw the upgradation of the clinical skills laboratory in September 2021.
