Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this course, you should be able to:
- Describe the general principles of aging and the biomedical and psychosocial issues of aging
- Recognize and apply the various dimensions of diversity, including race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, ability, and socioeconomic status, as they relate to older adults
- Discuss legal, ethical, and advance care planning issues related to geriatric medicine
- Appraise the financing of health care for older adults
- Identify the basic principles of geriatric medicine, including assessment, prognostication, pharmacotherapy, prevention, exercise, palliative care, rehabilitation, and sensory deficits
- Use state-of-the-art approaches or models of care for geriatric care while providing care in hospitals, office practices, nursing homes, home-care settings, telehealth platforms, and others
- Diagnose and manage geriatric syndromes, including dementia, delirium, urinary incontinence, malnutrition, osteoporosis, falls, pressure injuries, sleep disorders, pain, dysphagia, and dizziness
